About a year-and-a-half ago (during my recent tenure at Alliance for biking & Walking), I had the opportunity to facilitate a strategy retreat for Bike&Walk Montclair, a local organization that advocates for a community that embraces safe biking and walking for all people in Montclair, New Jersey. During the 1.5-day strategy retreat, in early 2012, the organization brought 25 people together (representing the board and key stakeholders of the organization) with the following purpose: “To come together as leaders to celebrate where we are today, and to ensure the future success of Bike&Walk Montclair and its efforts in our community.” During the retreat, they heard from panelists, discussed how to strengthen their internal operations, and created a brand new strategy for the organization. The goals developed during the retreat centered on membership development, education and encouragement, advocacy, and building organizational capacity.
When recently speaking with the past president of the organization, I learned that the efforts of this planning have resulted in the organization hiring their first staff person. (See below for press release). According to Rika Alper, the current board president, “Jeremy Grandstaff’s inspired and inspiring leadership of Bike&Walk Montclair’s strategic planning workshop provided the springboard that has catapulted our organization into a well-thought -out level of activity that is on track to make our second decade of growth even more effective and sustainable than our first.” S & G is so excited for Bike&Walk Montclair, and the residents of this awesome New Jersey town, who will be benefactors of the organization’s efforts to increase biking and walking for all. We congratulate them on their hard work to create their community-driven strategy and look forward to hearing about their future success.
Montclair Moves! Bike&Walk Montclair Shifts into High Gear!
Bike&Walk “Montclair Moves!” into its second decade with a bike-basketful of news and events to shift the organization into high gear. Thanks to a generous grant from the Partners for Health Foundation, we’re able to build capacity, develop an action plan and expand our reach into the community. We’re gonna need a bigger basket…’cause here’s what we’re putting in it:
Our First Staff Member! – We’d like to introduce Norma Tassy, lifetime Montclair resident and community pillar, as BWM’s first Executive Director. Norma has an extensive background in human resource management, recruiting, and training and she and her family “walk the talk” of bikes and feet on every street. Says Norma, “I am so unbelievably happy to have been chosen to lead an organization I believe in. And to be able to do it in the town that I love makes it all the more thrilling!”
Rika Alper, BWM’s new President, shared the enthusiasm. “Norma brings positive energy and a wealth of knowledge about the Montclair community and will help us address our organization goals as we plan for 2013 and beyond!” Read more here…
